It's one of the workhorse mild surfactants in the natural and sensitive-skin formulating world, and it comes with a couple of quirks worth understanding before you build a formula around it.

What it is

Decyl glucoside, INCI name Decyl Glucoside, CAS number 54549-25-6, is made by combining a fatty alcohol derived from coconut or corn (decyl alcohol) with a sugar, typically glucose derived from corn starch. The result is a nonionic surfactant, meaning it doesn't carry an electrical charge the way sulfates or most soap molecules do, which is part of why it tends to be gentler on skin and eyes.

It sits in the same broad family as coco glucoside and lauryl glucoside, the "alkyl glucoside" surfactants, all built on the same fatty-alcohol-plus-sugar chemistry, just with different chain lengths that change foam quality, viscosity behavior, and mildness slightly.

Why formulators reach for it

Decyl glucoside foams reasonably well for a mild surfactant, it's readily biodegradable, it's derived from renewable plant feedstocks rather than petroleum, and it plays well with the "clean" or "natural" positioning a lot of small cosmetic brands want on their label. The catch: it's alkaline, and it's not enough on its own

Second, decyl glucoside alone often doesn't clean or foam quite as effectively as consumers expect from a wash product. It's genuinely mild, which is exactly why it's popular, but that mildness comes with somewhat weaker detergency and thinner foam compared to harsher surfactants. Most commercial formulas pair it with a co-surfactant, something like cocamidopropyl betaine or another mild secondary surfactant, to boost foam quality and cleansing performance while keeping the overall system gentle. A formula built on decyl glucoside alone, at a modest use level, can end up feeling watery and underwhelming to a customer used to a sulfate-based wash.
