Every essential oil is a mixture of dozens of chemical constituents, and a handful of those constituents happen to be on fragrance allergen lists. Knowing which oils carry which allergens, even at a rough level, saves you from opening a full analytical report every time you formulate something new.
Why one oil can trigger several allergen entries at once
An essential oil isn't a single compound, it's a complex blend, and several of its natural constituents can independently be declarable allergens. Lavender, for instance, isn't "the linalool oil," it's an oil where linalool happens to be one of several notable constituents alongside others. That means a single fragrance choice in your formula can pull in more than one allergen line at once, and their concentrations need to be tracked individually, not lumped together as "lavender."
The cheat sheet
This is a starting reference for common constituent patterns, not a substitute for an actual certificate of analysis from your specific supplier, since natural variation between batches, growing regions, and extraction methods means percentages genuinely shift oil to oil.

Treat this table as a "what to check first" list, not a final answer. Every supplier should be able to provide a certificate of analysis or a composition breakdown for the specific batch you're using, and that document is your actual source of truth.
Turning a constituent percentage into a formula concentration
The chart tells you what to look for. It doesn't tell you whether your specific formula crosses a disclosure threshold, because that depends on how much of the oil you're using. The math is simple but easy to skip:
- Find the constituent percentage within the essential oil, from your supplier's certificate of analysis.
- Multiply that percentage by the essential oil's use level in your finished formula.
- If more than one ingredient in your formula contributes the same allergen, for example a lavender oil and a separate linalool-containing fragrance compound, add the contributions together.
- Compare the total against the applicable threshold: above 0.001% (10 ppm) for leave-on products, above 0.01% (100 ppm) for rinse-off products.
A lotion using 1% lavender oil, where linalool makes up roughly a third of that oil, works out to around 0.33% linalool in the finished product, well above the leave-on threshold and needing its own label declaration.
Chemotype variation is the wrinkle most cheat sheets skip
Some botanicals exist in multiple chemotypes, meaning plants of the same species grown differently or processed differently can yield oils with meaningfully different constituent ratios. Lavender is a good example, since different lavender oils can vary quite a bit in their linalool and limonene content depending on species and origin. This is exactly why a general cheat sheet can only point you toward what to check, while your actual disclosure obligation depends on the certificate of analysis for the batch in your hand.
