Somewhere along the way, ethylhexylglycerin picked up a reputation as a gentle, natural-sounding preservative, and that reputation is doing a lot of formulas a disservice. It's a genuinely useful ingredient. It's just not what people think it is.
What ethylhexylglycerin actually does
Ethylhexylglycerin is a skin conditioning agent and a preservative booster, also valued because it reduces the surface tension of a formula, which helps other ingredients (including preservatives) spread and penetrate more evenly. It has some antimicrobial activity of its own, but that activity is weak and narrow. It leans toward gram-positive bacteria and doesn't reliably knock back yeast, mold, or the full range of gram-negative organisms that show up in water-based cosmetics. Used alone, it will not give you a broad-spectrum preservative system, and a product preserved with ethylhexylglycerin by itself is at real risk of contamination over its shelf life.
Where it earns its keep: pairing with phenoxyethanol
This is why you almost never see ethylhexylglycerin standing alone on an ingredient list. It shows up constantly paired with phenoxyethanol, and the pairing isn't a coincidence. Phenoxyethanol is a well-established broad-spectrum preservative, but its efficacy against certain organisms improves when it's paired with a booster. Ethylhexylglycerin fills that role, and the combination is common enough that many suppliers sell it pre-blended as "phenoxyethanol and ethylhexylglycerin," often at a fixed ratio like 90/10 or 80/20.
The blend math you actually need to do
If you're using one of these pre-blended preservative systems, don't take the blend's total use level at face value for either ingredient. You need to break it into its actual INCI components and calculate the real finished-product concentration of each one.
Say your supplier blend is 90% Phenoxyethanol and 10% Ethylhexylglycerin, and you're using it at 1% of your total formula:

That 0.9% phenoxyethanol figure is the number that matters for concentration limit checks, not the 1% total blend use level. This is a common spot for errors on a Cosmetic Notification Form, where makers list the trade name or the blend's total percentage instead of breaking out each INCI ingredient with its true concentration.
Why this distinction matters for your filing
Health Canada's Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist lists prohibited and restricted substances, and preservatives are exactly the kind of ingredient category where concentration limits get checked closely. If your notification lists "Phenoxyethanol (and) Ethylhexylglycerin" as a single line at 1% without breaking out the actual phenoxyethanol concentration, you haven't given an accurate picture of what's really in the product. Trade names for preservative blends never belong on a filing either. Always map back to the INCI names underneath.
A quick self-check for your formula
- Is ethylhexylglycerin the only preservative-adjacent ingredient in your formula? If so, get a real preservative efficacy test before you trust the shelf life.
- Are you using a pre-blended system? Break out the actual percentage of each INCI component based on your total use level.
- Does your CNF list the individual INCI ingredients with accurate concentrations, not just the blend's trade name or combined total?
