Farnesol and Alpha Isomethyl Ionone on Ingredient Lists

These two declarable fragrance allergens hide inside compounded bases more often than makers expect. Here is where to look for them.

Everybody remembers to check for Linalool and Limonene. Those two get all the attention because they show up constantly in essential oil blends and citrus-forward fragrances. Farnesol and Alpha Isomethyl Ionone get missed a lot more often, mostly because they are less familiar names and they tend to arrive buried inside a compounded fragrance base rather than sitting there obviously as a single essential oil you added yourself.

What these two actually are

Farnesol is a naturally occurring compound found in a number of essential oils, including some of the same florals and citrus materials makers already use for scent. It also functions as part of the natural odor profile in several plant extracts, which means it can arrive in a formula through more than one route: directly if you add an essential oil containing it, or indirectly through a compounded fragrance blend that already includes it as one of its component materials.

Alpha Isomethyl Ionone is a synthetic aroma compound with a violet-like scent character, widely used in perfumery to build floral and powdery notes. Unlike Farnesol, it is not something you would typically add by tossing in a raw essential oil. It almost always arrives as one ingredient inside a fragrance compound, meaning a blend a fragrance house created and sells as a single trade-named product.

Why they hide so well

This is the real practical issue with both of these. A maker who is diligent about checking their essential oils against known allergens can still miss Farnesol and Alpha Isomethyl Ionone entirely, because neither one requires you to have added an obviously allergen-containing raw material yourself. Farnesol slips in through natural botanicals that are not always thought of as "the usual suspects." Alpha Isomethyl Ionone slips in exclusively through fragrance compounds, and a fragrance compound is exactly the kind of trade-named product that needs its full composition broken out before you can know what is actually in it.

If your fragrance oil supplier will not give you a full breakdown of allergen content in their compound, or gives you one that's vague or incomplete, that is a real problem, because you cannot screen or disclose what you cannot see.

The disclosure framework these fall under

In Canada, fragrance allergen disclosure is organized into two lists with separate mandatory dates. List 1, the original set of fragrance allergens, becomes mandatory on the Cosmetic Notification Form and on the label as of April 12, 2026. List 2, an expanded set aligned with international allergen lists, becomes mandatory on August 1, 2026. Farnesol has long been part of the more established allergen conversation and commonly appears on List 1. Alpha Isomethyl Ionone is the kind of less-familiar name that tends to appear as part of the expanded List 2 set. Because exact list membership and dates can be refined, always check the current Health Canada guidance for which list a given substance sits on before you finalize a filing.

The disclosure trigger itself is concentration-based, not simply presence-based: above 0.001 percent, which is 10 parts per million, in leave-on products, and above 0.01 percent, which is 100 parts per million, in rinse-off products. Both thresholds are low enough that even a small amount of a fragrance compound carrying trace Farnesol or Alpha Isomethyl Ionone can cross the line and require disclosure.

Building the habit

The safest approach is treating every fragrance-related ingredient, whether it is a single essential oil or a compounded blend from a fragrance house, as a place where Farnesol, Alpha Isomethyl Ionone, and the rest of the allergen list could be hiding until you have the paperwork proving otherwise. Do not assume a compound is allergen-free just because the trade name sounds simple or the supplier hasn't mentioned it unprompted.
