In House or Third Party Lab for Stability Testing
A cost and credibility comparison of running your own stability observations versus paying an accredited lab to do it.
Every maker hits this question eventually: do you run your own stability testing on a shelf in your workshop, or do you pay a lab to do it properly? The honest answer depends less on budget than on what you're actually trying to prove, and to whom.
What stability testing is actually for
Stability testing checks whether your formula holds up over time and under stress: does the emulsion separate, does the color shift, does the scent fade or turn, does the preservative system keep doing its job as the product ages. This isn't a regulatory filing requirement in the way a CNF or a product listing is, but it underpins the safety substantiation you're expected to have on file, and it's the kind of thing that matters enormously if a customer complaint ever turns into a real question about your product.
Good manufacturing practice guidance for cosmetics, laid out in ISO 22716, treats this kind of quality control as part of running a defensible operation, not as optional polish.
The case for doing it yourself
Running your own observations is genuinely reasonable for a lot of small batch makers, especially early on:
- Cost. A shelf, a temperature-controlled spot, a notebook, and consistent observation intervals cost you time, not money you don't have.
- Speed. You can start today. No lab queue, no turnaround time, no shipping samples anywhere.
- You learn your formula. Watching your own products age teaches you things a lab report won't, like which specific batch variable seems to correlate with an off smell showing up at month four.
The tradeoff is real, though. Your own observations carry your own bias and your own blind spots. You might not know what to look for in an early sign of oxidation, or you might convince yourself a slight color shift is "probably fine" because you want it to be fine.
The case for a third party lab
An accredited lab brings a few things you genuinely can't replicate at home:
- Structured protocols. Accelerated aging (elevated temperature and humidity cycles standing in for months of real time), freeze-thaw cycling, and controlled light exposure, run in a repeatable, documented way.
- Objective measurement. Instrumentation for pH drift, viscosity change, and microbial challenge testing, rather than a visual check and a sniff.
- Third party credibility. If a retailer, an insurer, or a regulator ever asks for stability data, a lab report from an accredited facility carries weight that your own notebook doesn't.
The cost is the obvious downside. Lab stability testing isn't free, and for a very small operation the invoice can feel disproportionate to your production volume.

A reasonable middle path a lot of makers land on: run your own ongoing observations as routine quality control on every batch, and bring in a lab for a formal stability study when you're about to scale, add a new preservative system, or pursue a retail relationship that's going to ask for documentation you can't produce yourself.
Don't skip it either way
The mistake isn't picking in-house over a lab or vice versa. It's skipping stability observation altogether because it feels like extra work with no immediate payoff. A preservative system that looked fine on day one can fail by month six, and that's exactly the kind of problem stability testing exists to catch before a customer does.
