Limonene on Your Label: What This Allergen Means

Limonene is the citrus-oil allergen that oxidizes over time, which changes how you should think about testing and shelf life.

Limonene shows up in more products than almost any other fragrance allergen, mostly because it's the dominant component of citrus peel oils. If you've ever used sweet orange, lemon, grapefruit, or bergamot essential oil in a formula, you've almost certainly brought limonene along with it, whether you were tracking it or not.

Where limonene actually comes from

Limonene is a terpene, and it's what gives citrus peels their characteristic bright, zesty smell. Cold-pressed citrus oils can be quite high in it, often making up the majority of the oil by weight. It also turns up as a minor constituent in a wide range of other essential oils and fragrance compounds, so even formulas without an obvious citrus note can contain measurable limonene.

Because it's so common and derived from natural sources, some makers assume "natural" means it's automatically gentler on skin. That's not really how sensitization works. Limonene is one of the substances known to cause allergic contact reactions in a subset of users, particularly with repeated exposure, and its presence has to be evaluated the same way regardless of whether it arrived through a synthetic fragrance compound or a bottle of pressed orange peel oil.

The oxidation problem that makes limonene trickier than most allergens

Here's where limonene gets genuinely more complicated than a lot of other allergens on the list. It oxidizes on exposure to air and light, and its oxidation products are actually more sensitizing than limonene itself. A fresh bottle of orange oil and the same bottle six months later, opened and closed repeatedly, are not chemically identical. The oxidized version carries more allergenic potential per gram of original limonene.

Practically, this means:

  • Storage matters. Keeping citrus oils tightly sealed, away from light and heat, and using them within a reasonable window after opening reduces the buildup of oxidation products.
  • A formula's allergen profile isn't fixed at the moment of manufacture. It can shift over the shelf life of the product if the finished product itself allows for oxidation.
  • Antioxidants in a formula can help slow this process, which is one more reason formulation choices interact with allergen labeling in ways that aren't obvious from the ingredient list alone.

Declaration thresholds

In Canada, fragrance allergens need to be declared separately, rather than folded into a generic "parfum" listing, once they cross defined concentration thresholds: above 0.001% (10 ppm) in leave-on products and above 0.01% (100 ppm) in rinse-off products. Because citrus oils are often used at meaningful percentages for scent, and because limonene is frequently the majority component of those oils, it's one of the allergens most likely to clear the threshold even in a fairly restrained fragrance load.

Limonene is part of List 1, the original fragrance allergen set, which becomes mandatory on the Cosmetic Notification Form and the label in Canada on April 12, 2026.

Calculating your actual limonene load

1 Find the limonene percentage within each citrus oil or fragrance compound you use, from a supplier spec sheet or published data
2 Multiply that percentage by the use level of the oil or compound in your finished formula
3 Add contributions from every source, since limonene often appears in more than one ingredient in the same formula
4 Compare the total to the leave-on or rinse-off threshold that applies to your product

A soap that uses a blend of sweet orange, lemon, and a citrus-forward fragrance oil could easily have three separate contributing sources of limonene, all needing to be summed before you know whether disclosure applies.

What to do with this information

If your formula crosses the threshold, limonene needs its own line on the ingredient list rather than disappearing into "parfum." That's not a mark against your product. Plenty of well-loved, perfectly safe products declare it because citrus and other popular scent profiles simply contain it at meaningful levels. The goal of the disclosure isn't to discourage the ingredient, it's to give the small number of people who are sensitized to it the information they need to avoid a reaction.
