Working Out Linalool Concentration From Lavender Oil
Lavender oil is mostly linalool and linalyl acetate. Here is the actual math for estimating your allergen exposure.
Somebody using lavender essential oil in a rinse-off body wash asked me how they were supposed to know their linalool percentage when the bottle just says "lavender oil." Fair question. Nobody puts linalool content on the essential oil label, so you have to work it out, and the math is simpler than it looks once you have the right number in hand.
Start with the essential oil's composition, not the bottle percentage
Lavender essential oil (typically Lavandula angustifolia) is not a single compound. It's a mix, and linalool along with linalyl acetate usually make up the largest share, though the exact ratio varies by growing region, harvest, and distillation method. This is exactly the kind of thing your supplier's certificate of analysis or safety data sheet should tell you, since a proper SDS lists composition in section 3.
If your supplier's documentation says the lavender oil contains, for example, a certain percentage of linalool by weight, that is your starting number. Without that document, you are guessing, and guessing on an allergen calculation is not a great habit to build.
The two-step multiplication
Once you have the linalool fraction of the oil itself, the calculation is straightforward:
- Find the linalool percentage in the essential oil (from the supplier's GC analysis or SDS).
- Multiply that percentage by your use level of the essential oil in the finished product.
So if your lavender oil is, say, 30% linalool by the supplier's documentation, and you're using the lavender oil at 1% in your finished body wash, the linalool contribution to the finished product is 30% times 1%, which works out to 0.3% of the essential oil's weight being linalool, or roughly 0.003% of the total finished product weight (0.30 times 0.01 = 0.003, expressed as 3,000 ppm... actually let's be precise: 0.30 × 1% = 0.3% of the oil's contribution, and since the oil itself is 1% of the product, the linalool ends up at 0.3% × 1% = 0.003% of the total product, which is 30 ppm).
This is the general logic for any supplier blend: multiply the component's concentration within the blend by the blend's use level in your finished formula, and you get the real concentration of that component in what actually ships to the customer.
Why this matters against the disclosure thresholds
Fragrance allergens have specific disclosure triggers that depend on whether the product is leave-on or rinse-off:

A rinse-off body wash with 30 ppm of linalool from our example above sits below the 100 ppm rinse-off threshold, so in that specific case it would not trigger mandatory disclosure. But bump the lavender oil use level up to 3% or 4%, which is common in a fragranced body wash, and you can cross that 100 ppm line quickly. The same lavender oil in a leave-on lotion would blow past its much lower 10 ppm threshold almost immediately, even at modest use levels.
Don't forget linalool can come from more than one source
If your fragrance also includes a separate fragrance compound or essential oil blend that itself contains linalool, you need to add up the contributions from every source, not evaluate each one in isolation. Lavender, bergamot, and many citrus oils all carry linalool naturally, so a formula with two or three botanical oils can accumulate linalool from multiple directions even if no single ingredient looks alarming on its own.
In Canada specifically
Canada's fragrance allergen disclosure comes in two waves. List 1, the original fragrance allergen set that includes linalool, becomes mandatory on the CNF and the label on April 12, 2026. List 2, an expanded set aligned with international lists, becomes mandatory August 1, 2026. Linalool sits on List 1, so if you're notifying a product with lavender oil in Canada, you'll want your linalool math done and documented well before that April date, not the week of.
Keep the paper trail
Save the supplier certificate of analysis that gives you the linalool percentage in your specific batch of lavender oil, since natural variation between harvests means the number can shift from lot to lot. That document is your evidence if a regulator or a buyer ever asks how you arrived at your allergen disclosure numbers.
