Linalool: The Lavender Allergen You Have to Declare
A profile of linalool, why it shows up in so many natural fragrances, and why oxidized linalool is the real allergen concern.
If you work with lavender oil, or rosewood, or half the florals in a typical soap maker's shelf, you are working with Linalool whether you think of it that way or not. It is one of the most common fragrance allergens in handmade cosmetics, precisely because it occurs so widely in essential oils people reach for because they smell nice and feel natural.
Where it actually comes from
Linalool is a naturally occurring terpene alcohol. It is a major component of lavender oil, and it also shows up in rosewood, bergamot, coriander, and a long list of other essential oils and botanical extracts. This is the part that surprises people: you do not need to add a synthetic fragrance compound to introduce Linalool into a formula. A completely natural, single-note lavender essential oil brings it along automatically, often in a fairly high proportion of the oil's overall composition.
That means "fragrance-free, essential oils only" is not the same thing as "allergen-free." It is a common assumption among makers who use only essential oils, and it does not hold up once you actually check what is inside those oils.
Why oxidized Linalool specifically
The allergen concern with Linalool is tied specifically to its oxidized form. Fresh, unoxidized Linalool is considerably less of a sensitizer than Linalool that has been sitting exposed to air and light over time, since the oxidation products are what drive most of the reported skin sensitization. This has a very practical consequence for makers: old essential oil, or oil that has been decanted into a wide-mouth container and left partially open, is likely to carry a higher load of oxidized Linalool than the same oil fresh from a sealed, properly stored bottle.
Practically, this means:
- Store lavender and other Linalool-rich oils away from light and heat, and reseal tightly after each use.
- Do not treat an old bottle of lavender oil that has been open for a long stretch as equivalent to a fresh one for allergen purposes, even though the label percentage on paper has not changed.
- Antioxidants added to a fragrance blend can help slow this oxidation process, which is one reason some fragrance houses build them into their compounds.
Where the disclosure threshold comes in
In Canada, fragrance allergen disclosure is tied to concentration thresholds that are quite low: above 0.001%, or 10 ppm, in leave-on products, and above 0.01%, or 100 ppm, in rinse-off products. Given how much Linalool a straight lavender essential oil can contain, it does not take much of that oil in a finished formula to cross either threshold. A leave-on lotion with even a modest dose of lavender oil is very likely to need Linalool disclosed. A rinse-off soap has a higher bar to clear, but a heavily scented bar can still get there.
The first mandatory allergen list in Canada, which includes Linalool, becomes required on both the Cosmetic Notification Form and the product label starting April 12, 2026. A second, expanded list follows on August 1, 2026. If you have been selling a lavender-scented product without tracking this, this is the point where it stops being optional.

If you use any of these, or a fragrance oil blend built around them, assume Linalool is present and get the actual percentage from your supplier's documentation rather than assuming a "natural" label means low risk. Nature does not sort ingredients by allergen potential, it just makes what it makes.
What to actually do about it
Ask your essential oil or fragrance supplier for a Linalool percentage, or at minimum confirm whether it is present and roughly how much. Calculate its concentration in your finished product the same way you would any other ingredient, by multiplying the oil's percentage in your formula by Linalool's percentage within that oil. Compare against the relevant threshold for your product type, leave-on or rinse-off. If you are above it, plan to disclose Linalool on your label and notification once the applicable deadline arrives.
