The Quality Checks to Run on Every Batch You Make
The pH, weight, appearance, and fill checks that catch most cosmetic batch defects before a single unit reaches a customer.
Most cosmetic complaints trace back to something that could have been caught at the batch stage, before the product ever left the workshop. Separation in a lotion, a bar of soap that's soft and sweating three weeks after cure, a fill weight that's quietly drifted low across a production run. None of these require a lab you can't afford. They require a short, repeatable checklist that you actually run every single time, not just when something feels off.
The checks that matter most
pH testing. This is the single highest-value check for most leave-on and rinse-off liquid and cream products. A pH that's drifted outside your target range can signal a mixing error, an ingredient substitution, or a stability problem before it becomes visible to the eye. Use a calibrated meter, not just strips, if your product category is pH-sensitive (facial products, anything with active acids, anything preserved by pH control). Record the reading against your target range for that specific formula, since "acceptable pH" varies a lot between a clarifying toner and a rich body butter.
Weight and fill accuracy. Check fill weight on a sample from the start, middle, and end of a filling run, not just the first unit off the line. Filling equipment and manual pours both drift over time, and a consistent under-fill is both a customer complaint waiting to happen and a labeling accuracy issue if your net weight claim no longer matches reality.
Appearance and texture. A visual and tactile check sounds unscientific, but it's genuinely effective for catching the early signs of separation, graininess, discoloration, or an off odor that suggests a formulation or contamination problem. Compare against a retained sample from a known-good batch whenever possible, memory alone drifts.
Viscosity, where it applies. For products where thickness is part of the customer experience or the delivery mechanism (a serum, a lotion, a gel cleanser), a simple consistent viscosity check, even a basic flow test rather than a lab viscometer, catches batches that are noticeably thinner or thicker than your standard.
Label and packaging accuracy. Check that the ingredient list on the label matches the actual formula for that specific batch, especially if you've made even a minor recent tweak. Confirm bilingual label content is present and correctly formatted if you're selling into the Canadian market. Confirm any lot code or batch number is legible and correctly applied.

A check you don't record is a check you can't prove happened. If a customer complaint or a regulator question ever comes up, having a simple log, batch number, date, pH reading, fill weight sample, appearance notes, signed off by whoever ran the check, is the difference between "here's our record" and "we're pretty sure we checked that." This doesn't need to be complicated. A simple spreadsheet row per batch is enough for most small operations, the goal is consistency, not sophistication.
