Reading the SDS for an Active Like Niacinamide
How to read a single-substance SDS for an active like niacinamide and pull a clean concentration percentage for your filing.
Niacinamide is the friendliest SDS you will ever open. No blend to unpack, no trade name mystery, no mystery percentage to back-calculate. It is one substance, sold as one substance, and that makes it the perfect place to learn how to read a safety data sheet before you tackle the messier ones.
Compare that to a supplier blend where a fragrance house sells you "GlowComplex 4" and section 3 lists six components at percentage ranges. With niacinamide powder, section 3 usually says something close to niacinamide, 100%. That is the whole ingredient. What you buy is what goes in your formula, full stop.
Where to look first
An SDS has 16 sections by convention. For pulling ingredient data into a cosmetic filing, you only need a handful of them:
- Section 1: identification, including the supplier's product name and intended use
- Section 3: composition and ingredient information, the section that matters most for your notification
- Section 9: physical and chemical properties, useful context but not filing data
- Section 16: revision date and general disclaimers
Section 3 is where the INCI name and CAS number live. For niacinamide, you are looking for the CAS number 98-92-0, which identifies nicotinamide (niacinamide) as a unique substance in chemical registries. Some suppliers list the INCI name directly as "Niacinamide," others list the IUPAC or common chemical name and expect you to map it yourself. If the SDS only shows a chemical name you do not recognize, that is worth a quick cross-check rather than a guess.
Why single-substance actives are the easy case
The reason niacinamide is a good first SDS to practice on is that there is no math involved. With a blend, you have to multiply. If a preservative blend is used at 1% in your formula and section 3 shows one of its components at 20 to 25% of the blend, that component's real concentration in your finished product is somewhere between 0.20% and 0.25%, and you need the concentration range on record, not just the blend's overall use level.
With a pure active like niacinamide, there is nothing to expand. If your formula calls for 5% niacinamide by weight and the SDS confirms the raw material is essentially pure niacinamide, then 5% is what goes on your notification. You are not multiplying anything by anything else.

Treat this as a starting reference, not gospel. Some actives genuinely have more than one CAS number depending on the salt form or manufacturing process, and it is worth confirming the exact number against the SDS you actually hold in hand rather than a table like this one, because your filing needs to match your actual supplier's documentation.
Where it gets slightly less simple
Even a "pure" active SDS sometimes hides a wrinkle. Manufacturers occasionally supply niacinamide pre-diluted in a carrier, especially for handling reasons in liquid formats, so the SDS might show niacinamide at 98% with the balance being water or propylene glycol. Read section 3 carefully rather than assuming 100% just because the product name says "niacinamide" on the label. If there is a diluent, that changes your math and you need to account for it when you calculate the active's real concentration in your finished product.
Also check the revision date in section 16. SDS documents get updated when classification data changes, and using a stale one is a common way outdated hazard information slips into your files.

Once you have the INCI name and the confirmed percentage from your formula, you are ready to check the ingredient against your target market's restricted list.
