Why emulsifying wax is a blend, not an ingredient
"Emulsifying wax" is a functional trade name, not an INCI name. Under that name, different suppliers combine different actual ingredients to create a product that does the same job: helping oil and water phases combine into a stable emulsion. Two suppliers' "emulsifying wax NF" might be built from different combinations of fatty alcohols and emulsifying agents, even though they behave similarly on the bench and share a common commercial name.

Say your lotion recipe uses emulsifying wax at 5% of the total formula, and the SDS shows that blend is 60% cetearyl alcohol and 25% polysorbate 60. The real concentrations in your finished lotion are:
- Cetearyl alcohol: 5% × 60% = 3% of the finished product
- Polysorbate 60: 5% × 25% = 1.25% of the finished product
This is the multiplication step that gets skipped more often than it should, usually because a maker lists "emulsifying wax, 5%" directly on their ingredient declaration or filing instead of expanding it into its real components at their real concentrations. Regulators and reviewers want the actual components, not the trade name.
When the SDS gives you a range instead of an exact number
Ranges are common because suppliers treat exact ratios as proprietary. When you only have a range, use the top of the range for any restriction or concentration-limit check, since that's the conservative approach: if the ingredient is compliant at the highest percentage the range allows, you're covered regardless of where the actual batch falls within that range. If a range pushes a component close to a restricted limit, it's worth asking your supplier directly for a tighter figure rather than guessing.
A quick workflow for any blended raw material
- Pull the current SDS for the specific product from the specific supplier, not a generic version found online.
- Read section 3 for listed components, CAS numbers, and percentage ranges.
- Map each component to its correct INCI name if the SDS uses a generic chemical name instead.
- Multiply each component's blend percentage by your formula's use level of the blend to get real finished-product concentrations.
- Check each resulting concentration against your target market's restricted list.
