Reading the SDS for Lye Used in Soap Making

Section 2, Hazard Identification. This lays out the actual hazard classification, corrosive to skin and eyes being the headline concern with sodium hydroxide, and it is the section that explains why goggles and gloves are not optional theater in a soap workshop.
Section 4, First Aid Measures. Worth reading once, calmly, before you need it in a hurry. Lye splashes are the kind of thing you want a memorized response to, not a document you are searching for mid-incident.

Keeping the SDS on file is not just a good habit, it is generally expected as part of running a responsible small operation, and it should sit alongside your other production records: batch logs, supplier invoices, and your formula documentation. If your bar is sold strictly as soap, meaning it is an alkali salt of fatty acids with a cleansing claim only, it can be treated differently than a cosmetic in a number of markets. The moment you add a claim like moisturizing, anti-acne, or softening, you have made a cosmetic claim, and that bar is generally treated as a cosmetic regardless of the fact that it started life through saponification. That shift changes what documentation and filing obligations apply to the finished product, even though your lye handling and SDS practices in the workshop stay exactly the same.
