Declaring Sodium Lactate and Other Soap Hardeners

How sodium lactate and other bar hardeners should show up on your ingredient list, and why the amount used still matters.

Sodium lactate is one of those additives soap makers swear by and then completely forget about when it comes time to write the ingredient list. It's added in small amounts, it doesn't change the scent or color, and it does its job quietly in the mold. That quietness is exactly why it gets left off filings more often than it should.

Here's the thing: quiet doesn't mean exempt. If it's in the finished bar, it goes on the list, same as your oils and your lye.

What sodium lactate actually does

Sodium lactate is the sodium salt of lactic acid, usually added to the soap batter at trace, typically as a liquid solution mixed in with the lye water. It doesn't affect saponification chemistry in a meaningful way. What it does is help the bar harden faster and release from the mold sooner, which matters a lot if you're running a busy small-batch operation and don't want soap tying up molds for a week.

It's a genuinely useful additive. It's also genuinely an ingredient, in the same sense that citric acid or a superfat oil is an ingredient, and it needs to be declared using its INCI name: Sodium Lactate.

Other common hardeners and where they land

Sodium lactate isn't the only additive soap makers reach for to speed up hardening or improve bar longevity. A few others show up regularly:

Every one of these needs to be on the list if it's in the batch, and every one of these needs its correct INCI name rather than the common name on the supplier's label or the name you've always called it in your own notes.

Why the amount still matters even for "safe" additives

Sodium lactate is not on prohibited or restricted lists in the markets Cosmetic Comply currently covers, and it's broadly considered safe at the levels soap makers use. That doesn't mean concentration is irrelevant to your filing.

A couple of practical reasons to still track the percentage carefully:

  • Order on the list. Ingredients are generally expected in descending order of concentration above a certain threshold. If sodium lactate is your third-highest ingredient by weight because you're using an unusually strong solution, it needs to sit in that position, not buried at the bottom because that's where hardeners "always go."
  • Supplier solution strength varies. Sodium lactate is commonly sold as a 60% aqueous solution, but not always. If you're calculating your finished-product percentage based on an assumed concentration and your supplier's product is actually a different strength, your declared percentage will be off. Check the SDS or product spec sheet for the actual solution strength before doing the math.
  • True soap versus cosmetic claim. If your bar is sold purely on a cleansing claim, some jurisdictions treat "true soap" differently from a cosmetic. The moment you add a claim like "moisturizing" or "softens skin," that same bar is treated as a cosmetic, and every additive, hardener included, needs the same ingredient rigor as any lotion or cream would.

A quick habit that saves rework

When you're documenting a soap recipe, treat every additive the same way regardless of how small the amount is or how long you've been using it without a second thought. Sodium lactate, sugar, salt, citric acid, and fragrance oils all go through the same INCI mapping and concentration check.
