Amyl and Hexyl Cinnamal: Jasmine-Note Allergens

Why these lab-made jasmine notes carry fragrance allergen disclosure requirements the same as naturally derived ones.

There's a persistent assumption that "synthetic" fragrance ingredients somehow sidestep allergen rules that apply to essential oils, since those rules are so often discussed alongside lavender or citrus. Amyl cinnamal and hexyl cinnamal are a clean example of why that assumption is wrong.

What these two actually are

Both are synthetic aroma chemicals used to create jasmine-like floral notes in perfumery and cosmetic fragrance. They're built in a lab rather than extracted from a plant, which is exactly why some formulators assume they fall outside allergen disclosure entirely. Fragrance houses use them because they're consistent, stable, and cheaper to produce reliably at scale than natural jasmine absolute, which is itself expensive and variable batch to batch.

Hexyl cinnamal in particular shows up often in commercial fragrance oils marketed for candles, lotions, and soap, frequently without the maker realizing it's present, because it arrives bundled inside a proprietary fragrance blend rather than added as a standalone ingredient.

Why lab-made doesn't mean allergen-free

Allergen disclosure rules are built around a substance's known potential to trigger skin sensitization in some portion of the population, not around whether it occurs in nature. A molecule that's identical whether it's extracted from a flower or synthesized in a reactor behaves the same way on skin either way. Regulators treat known fragrance allergens as a defined list of substances by name, and that list doesn't carve out an exception for synthetic origin.

This is worth internalizing because it changes how you audit your own fragrance oils. If you're checking a supplier's ingredient disclosure and you see "natural fragrance oil, no synthetic ingredients" on the marketing copy, that tells you nothing about whether hexyl cinnamal, amyl cinnamal, or other allergens are present. You need the actual composition breakdown, not the marketing framing.

Where this fits into Canada's disclosure timeline

Canada's fragrance allergen rules are rolling out in two stages. List 1, the original fragrance allergen set, becomes mandatory on the CNF and the label on April 12, 2026. List 2, an expanded set aligned with international lists, becomes mandatory August 1, 2026. Depending on exactly which list amyl and hexyl cinnamal fall under in the current published lists, and that's worth confirming directly against Health Canada's current published list since these things do get refined, you'll need to know whether either compound is present in your fragrance blend and at what concentration.

Disclosure triggers are concentration-based:

Those thresholds are low. A fragrance oil used at a typical 1 to 3% in a lotion doesn't need to contain much hexyl cinnamal at all before it crosses the leave-on threshold.

How to actually check your fragrance blend

This is the practical problem: fragrance blends are almost always sold as proprietary mixtures, and the supplier's public documentation frequently just says "fragrance" or "parfum" with no breakdown. You need the supplier's allergen disclosure statement specifically, which reputable fragrance houses provide on request, listing each regulated allergen present and its approximate concentration within the blend.

Steps that actually work:

  1. Ask your fragrance supplier directly for an allergen declaration or IFRA certificate covering the specific blend you're using, by lot or version number if they update formulas.
  2. Cross-reference the named allergens against Canada's current List 1 and List 2, checking for amyl cinnamal, hexyl cinnamal, and the others.
  3. Calculate the real concentration in your finished product the same way you would for any blended ingredient, multiply the allergen's share of the fragrance blend by your fragrance use level in the formula.
  4. Compare that number against the leave-on or rinse-off threshold depending on your product type.

Common allergens that travel with jasmine and floral notes

Beyond amyl and hexyl cinnamal, floral and fruity fragrance profiles often carry other familiar names on the allergen lists: limonene, linalool, citronellol, geraniol, eugenol, and coumarin. These occur naturally in many essential oils too, so a formula built partly on natural florals and partly on synthetic jasmine notes can easily be carrying several allergens at once, each needing its own concentration check.

The bigger point

Whether an allergen came from a rose petal or a reactor, once it's above the disclosure threshold in your finished product, it goes on the label. Getting a real breakdown from your fragrance supplier, rather than trusting "natural" or "synthetic" as a proxy for safety, is the only reliable way to know what you're actually required to disclose.
