Cinnamon-scented anything, soap, lip balm, holiday candles, tends to smell incredible and cause a disproportionate share of skin reactions. If you've ever wondered why cinnamon shows up so often in allergen warnings compared to, say, lavender, it comes down to two specific compounds: cinnamal and cinnamyl alcohol. They're closely related, they're both genuinely reputed to be strong sensitizers, and a lot of makers using cinnamon bark or cassia essential oil don't realize they're introducing both at once.

Cinnamal (also called cinnamaldehyde) is the compound largely responsible for cinnamon's characteristic smell and flavor. Cinnamyl alcohol is chemically related but distinct, showing up alongside cinnamal in cinnamon bark oil and also appearing in some synthetic fragrance compositions used to create cinnamon, balsamic, or spicy notes without using the natural essential oil at all.

Because they're chemically related and often occur together naturally, formulators sometimes assume disclosing one covers the other. It doesn't. If your fragrance blend or essential oil contains both, both need to be evaluated and disclosed independently against whatever concentration thresholds your market applies.

Why they carry a strong sensitizing reputation

Both compounds are widely recognized in dermatology and fragrance-safety literature as being among the more potent skin sensitizers found in natural fragrance materials. This isn't a fringe concern, it's a big part of why cinnamon bark oil in particular carries firm usage guidance from fragrance safety bodies, and why it shows up disproportionately in patch-test panels for people with known fragrance sensitivities.

Practically, that means:

  • Cinnamon bark essential oil tends to be used at very low percentages in leave-on products, often under half a percent of the total fragrance load, and sometimes avoided in leave-on formulas entirely in favor of cinnamon leaf oil, which carries a gentler profile.
  • Products marketed with strong cinnamon notes (holiday-themed soaps, lip products, warming massage oils) deserve extra scrutiny on total allergen load, not just the headline scent compound.

Where disclosure thresholds come in

Fragrance allergen disclosure isn't just a "nice to know," it's becoming a hard label and filing requirement in more markets. In Canada, for example, the fragrance allergen disclosure framework is rolling out in two phases: List 1 becomes mandatory on the Cosmetic Notification Form and the label on April 12, 2026, and List 2, an expanded set aligned with international lists, becomes mandatory August 1, 2026. Disclosure triggers apply above 0.001% (10 ppm) in leave-on products and above 0.01% (100 ppm) in rinse-off products, which are low thresholds that a lot of naturally-derived fragrance ingredients will cross without anyone intending it.

Cinnamal and cinnamyl alcohol are both commonly named allergens tracked under these lists, alongside others like Limonene, Linalool, Citronellol, Geraniol, Eugenol, and Coumarin, all of which occur naturally across a wide range of essential oils, not just synthetic fragrance compounds.

Doing the math on your own formula

If you're using cinnamon bark oil directly (not a pre-blended fragrance), here's roughly how you'd think through disclosure:

  1. Get the actual composition breakdown of your cinnamon bark oil batch. Natural oils vary by harvest and supplier, so cinnamal content can range meaningfully batch to batch.
  2. Multiply the essential oil's use percentage in your finished formula by the approximate cinnamal (and cinnamyl alcohol) content of the oil itself.
  3. Compare that resulting percentage against your market's leave-on or rinse-off threshold.
  4. If you're near the line, treat it as over the line. Supplier composition data isn't perfectly precise, and a compound this reactive isn't the place to round in your favor.
