Concentration Math for Actives Added at Trace in Soap
Adding an active oil or extract at trace changes the concentration math for cold-process soap. Here's how to calculate it against total batch weight.
Adding calendula-infused oil, activated charcoal, or a botanical extract at trace feels like a small step in the soapmaking process, but the moment that soap makes a cosmetic claim, that "small step" becomes a line on your ingredient list with a concentration that needs to be right. And the math for trace additions works a little differently than the straightforward "this ingredient is X% of my formula" calculation you'd use for a lotion, because of how cold-process soap batches are built.
Why soap concentration math is trickier
In a lotion or cream, you're usually mixing everything into one batch and every ingredient's percentage is straightforward: ingredient weight divided by total batch weight. Cold-process soap has an extra wrinkle: the saponification reaction itself. Your oils react with lye to become soap, water evaporates out during cure, and the final bar's weight isn't the same as your starting batch weight. So when you add an active "at trace," meaning after the main oils and lye have already begun reacting, you need to decide what you're calculating the percentage against: the total raw batch weight (oils plus lye solution plus trace additives), or the estimated finished bar weight after cure.
For notification purposes, what matters is the concentration in the product as sold, which is closer to finished bar weight, but most makers calculate against total batch weight as a practical, conservative approximation, since it's simpler to track at the mixing stage and tends to slightly overstate rather than understate concentration.
The basic calculation
The math itself is simple once you fix your denominator:
Active weight added at trace ÷ Total batch weight × 100 = Percentage in formula
For example, if your batch uses 1,000 grams of oils plus lye solution, and you add 20 grams of calendula extract at trace, that's:
20 ÷ 1,020 × 100 = 1.96%
Note the denominator includes the trace addition itself, not just the pre-trace oil and lye weight. This is a common small error: dividing by the base batch weight before the addition, rather than the total weight including it, which overstates the percentage slightly and isn't the correct calculation.
Working through a supplier blend at trace
Where this gets more involved is when your trace addition is itself a supplier blend rather than a single ingredient, which is common with pre-made "soap additive" oils. If a supplier's skin-conditioning blend is 10% active botanical extract and 90% carrier oil, and you add 30 grams of that blend to a 1,000 gram batch:
- Blend as a percentage of total batch: 30 ÷ 1,030 × 100 = 2.91%
- Active extract within the blend: 2.91% × 10% = 0.29% of the finished batch
This is the same "multiply through" logic that applies to any supplier blend, whether you're formulating a soap or a serum: the label-relevant concentration of the active component is its concentration within the blend, multiplied by how much of the blend you used.

*When adding multiple trace ingredients, recalculate the running total batch weight as you go, or sum all additions and divide once against the full final total, whichever you find easier to track consistently.
Why this matters for your CNF
Health Canada's Cosmetic Notification Form asks for ingredients listed by INCI name with a concentration or concentration range. If your trace additive pushes an ingredient into a restricted range on the Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist, or if it's a fragrance component that needs disclosure once it crosses the leave-on or rinse-off allergen threshold, getting the percentage right isn't a formality, it's the number a reviewer is actually screening.
