Total Essential Oil Load Versus Each Oil Individually

How to respect an overall essential-oil dermal ceiling and per-oil sensitizer limits in the same formula at once.

Blend four essential oils into a body oil and you're actually managing two separate math problems at the same time, and they don't collapse into one number. There's the total essential oil load in the product, and there's each individual oil's own sensitizer contribution. Get only one of them right and you can still end up with a formula that's technically over a limit you didn't check.

Two different ceilings, two different questions

Total essential oil load asks: across everything you've blended in, how much essential oil is in the finished product overall? This matters because essential oils in aggregate can be irritating or sensitizing on skin even when each individual component looks fine in isolation. A body oil built from five different essential oils, each at what seems like a modest 1%, adds up to 5% total essential oil, which is a very different dermal exposure than a single oil at 1%.

Individual sensitizer limits ask a narrower question about specific known allergens: how much Linalool, Limonene, Citronellol, Geraniol, Eugenol, or Coumarin is actually present in the finished product, tallied across every oil that contributes it, regardless of which bottle it came from?

You can pass one check and fail the other. A blend with a low total essential oil percentage can still push an individual allergen over its threshold if you picked oils that are all rich in the same compound. Conversely, a blend can have each individual allergen sitting comfortably under its limit while the total essential oil load is high enough to be a dermal irritation concern on its own.

Working through both at once

Say you're building a body oil with four essential oils, each contributing linalool, a common allergen found in many essential oils naturally.

Total linalool contribution 0.73%, or 7,300 ppm

Here you'd check two things separately. First, is a 2.3% total essential oil load acceptable for the product type you're making and the skin contact involved. Second, does 7,300 ppm of linalool clear the disclosure and, where applicable, the concentration threshold for that allergen in your product's category, leave-on or rinse-off.

Notice how the individual oils each look modest on their own, 1.0%, 0.5%, 0.5%, 0.3%, but the shared allergen adds up fast because more than one of them happens to carry linalool. This is the trap: looking at each oil's use level in isolation and missing that four different bottles are all contributing to the same allergen tally.

A practical process

  1. List every essential oil in the formula with its use level. Add them up for your total essential oil load figure.
  2. Get an allergen or component breakdown for each oil, ideally from a supplier CoA or a reputable reference, since natural variation means percentages shift batch to batch.
  3. Build a table like the one above for each allergen that shows up in more than one of your oils. Linalool, limonene, and geraniol are especially common repeat offenders since they occur naturally across a wide range of essential oils.
  4. Check the summed allergen total against the disclosure threshold for your product's leave-on or rinse-off category, and separately, check your total essential oil load against whatever general dermal guidance you're working from for that product type.
  5. Don't average, sum. Every oil contributing to the same allergen adds to one running total, it doesn't get treated as separate, independent 1% doses.

Why this is worth the spreadsheet time

Essential oil blending is often where small brands do their most creative formulation work, layering scents to build something distinctive. That's exactly why it's also where the allergen math gets complicated fastest, more oils means more overlapping contributors to track. A blend that smells brilliant can still need a second look at the numbers before it's ready to file.
