Ethylhexylglycerin: A Preservative Booster and Skin Conditioner

If you've ever read a preservative blend label and seen "Phenoxyethanol (and) Ethylhexylglycerin" and assumed the second ingredient was just along for the ride, it's actually doing real work, just not the work its name might suggest to a newcomer. This is one of those ingredients people either overrate (thinking it preserves on its own) or underrate (thinking it's filler), and neither read is quite right.
What it is and where it comes from
Ethylhexylglycerin is a glyceryl ether, structurally related to glycerin but modified to give it properties glycerin alone doesn't have. Its INCI name is exactly that, Ethylhexylglycerin, and its CAS number is 70445-33-9. It's used in two overlapping roles: as a skin-conditioning agent and as a preservative enhancer, sometimes called a preservative booster or potentiator.
Why it's not a preservative on its own
This is the point worth getting right before you build a preservation system around it. Ethylhexylglycerin has some antimicrobial activity, but it is not broad-spectrum enough on its own to reliably protect a water-containing formula against bacteria, yeast, and mold across a product's shelf life. Relying on it alone as your only preservative is a common and risky mistake, especially in anything with a meaningful water content, which is most cosmetics.
What it does well is make other preservatives, most commonly phenoxyethanol, work harder. It's believed to interact with microbial cell membranes in a way that increases their permeability, which lets the actual preservative penetrate and act more effectively. In practice this means a formulator can often use less phenoxyethanol overall while getting comparable or better preservation, because the ethylhexylglycerin is doing supporting work.
The pairing that shows up constantly
You'll see this ingredient most often in a two-part combination:

The skin-conditioning side
Separately from its preservative-boosting role, ethylhexylglycerin has emollient properties. It can improve the feel of a formula, giving a slightly smoother, less tacky finish, which is part of why it earns a spot in the ingredient list even in formulas where the preservative load is already handled by something else.
What this means when you're filing
A few practical points for notification purposes:
- Map it correctly. If a supplier blend lists something like "Optiphen" or another trade name, that name never appears on your filing. You need to expand it to its INCI components, likely Phenoxyethanol and Ethylhexylglycerin, each listed separately with its own concentration.
- Do the math on concentration. If your blend is used at, say, 1% of the finished formula, and the blend itself is 90% phenoxyethanol and 10% ethylhexylglycerin, then the finished-product concentration of ethylhexylglycerin is 0.1%, not 10%. Multiply the component percentage by the blend's use level, don't just carry over the blend's internal ratio as if it were the final concentration.
- Don't list it as your sole preservative in your safety rationale. If a reviewer sees ethylhexylglycerin standing alone as "the preservative" for a water-based formula, that's a flag worth addressing before it becomes a bigger question.
A quick reality check for new formulators
