Lake Pigments: Why One Colorant Becomes Two INCI Entries
A lake pigment is a dye bonded to a substrate, and a compliant filing has to name both halves separately, not the trade name.
Someone hands you a jar labeled "Red Lake 27" or a supplier spec sheet that just says "Ultra Pink Lake" and you go looking for the matching INCI name, and there isn't one clean entry waiting for you. That's because a lake pigment isn't a single substance. It's a dye precipitated onto an insoluble substrate, usually alumina, and both halves of that pairing need to show up on your ingredient documentation.
What a lake actually is
A true dye is soluble and would bleed or migrate in a formula like soap or lip balm. To make it usable in a solid or semi-solid product, manufacturers "lake" it, chemically binding the dye onto a carrier material so it becomes insoluble and stable. The result behaves like a pigment even though it started life as a dye.
That means a lake pigment has two identities baked into one particle:
- The colorant itself, usually identified by its Colour Index (CI) number, something like CI 15850 or CI 45410.
- The substrate it's bound to, most often Alumina, sometimes calcium or barium salts depending on the pigment chemistry.
Why both need to appear
Trade names never belong on a filing. "Ultra Pink Lake" tells a formulator or a regulator nothing verifiable. What identifies the substance is the CI number mapped to its INCI designation, and separately, the INCI name of the substrate carrying it. When you list a lake pigment correctly, you're effectively listing two ingredients that happen to arrive in your studio as one physical powder.
This isn't unique to lakes, but it trips people up more with color because the finished swatch looks and behaves like a single thing. Compare it to how a supplier blend works generally: you always need to expand a blend into its real components and carry the percentages through, rather than listing the blend's trade name as if it were one ingredient. A lake is really a two-component blend that a colorant manufacturer sells as a single powder.
A worked example
Suppose you're using a red lake pigment in a lip product at 2% of the finished formula, and your supplier's documentation says the pigment is 40% dye and 60% alumina substrate by weight.

Multiply the component percentage by the lake's use level, exactly the same math you'd use for any supplier blend. Skip that step and you either underreport the alumina entirely or overstate the actual dye load, both of which are the kind of error a careful reviewer catches.
Where people get stuck
Some CI numbers map cleanly to a single, well-documented INCI name. Others have regional naming quirks, and a few older or less common lakes have thin documentation, meaning you may need to go back to your supplier for a certificate of analysis that spells out the exact CI number and substrate ratio rather than guessing from a product photo or a marketing description.
If your supplier can't tell you the CI number or the substrate breakdown, that's worth pushing on before you finalize a formula around that pigment. It's not unreasonable to ask; reputable pigment suppliers keep this documentation on hand because plenty of their customers need it for exactly this reason.
Keeping your records straight
For every lake pigment in your palette, keep on file:
- The CI number as provided by the supplier
- The INCI name for the substrate (commonly Alumina)
- The dye-to-substrate ratio
- Your use level of the finished lake powder in each product
That gives you everything you need to calculate real finished-product concentrations whenever a formula changes or a new shade gets added to the line.
