Using SDS Section 9 Physical Properties in Your Records

How Section 9 of a supplier SDS backs up your formulation records and label wording, with what to actually pull from it.

Most makers skim past Section 9 of a safety data sheet because it looks like lab trivia. Melting point, pH, viscosity, flash point. None of it screams "regulatory," so it gets filed and forgotten. That's a missed opportunity, because Section 9 is quietly one of the more useful sections in the whole document once you're building out formulation records or defending a label claim.

An SDS has 16 sections by convention, and Section 9 is titled Physical and Chemical Properties. It's meant for safe handling and transport, not cosmetic labeling. But the data in it maps surprisingly well onto questions you'll get asked later, either by a regulator, a retailer, or your own future self trying to remember why a batch behaved differently.

What's actually sitting in Section 9

Depending on the supplier, you'll typically see some mix of:

  • Physical state (liquid, solid, paste, powder)
  • Color and odor
  • pH (often given as a value or range, sometimes "as supplied" versus "as diluted")
  • Melting point / freezing point
  • Boiling point
  • Flash point
  • Density or specific gravity
  • Water solubility
  • Viscosity

Not every field gets filled in for every raw material. A botanical extract might have "not determined" next to half these fields, and that's normal. Suppliers report what's relevant to how the material ships and handles, not what a formulator would ideally want.

Where this connects to your records

If you're keeping formulation notes (and you should be, notification systems generally expect you to have backup for what you filed), Section 9 gives you a paper trail for things you might otherwise only know anecdotally.

pH claims. If your label or marketing says "pH balanced" or references a target pH range, your finished-product pH should trace back to something. Section 9 pH data on your surfactants, acids, and bases lets you show the math behind why your formula lands where it does, even before you measure the finished batch.

Physical state and stability notes. A supplier listing "solid below 25°C" on a butter or wax explains why your product might separate or seize in a cold warehouse. When a customer complains about texture, that Section 9 line is often the answer, and it's useful to have on hand rather than reverse-engineering it after the fact.

Solubility. Water solubility data tells you whether an ingredient needs an emulsifier, a solubilizer, or neither. It's a sanity check against your own formula logic, and it's handy if you ever need to explain why a preservative is dosed the way it is in a water-based versus oil-based system.

Flash point and boiling point are mostly there for transport and workplace safety rather than anything a customer sees, but they still belong in your file because an auditor or insurer may ask.

It's not a substitute for testing

Section 9 values are typically for the raw material as the supplier ships it, not your finished, diluted, blended product. If you're citing a pH claim, your actual finished-product pH strip or meter reading is still the real evidence. Section 9 is context and cross-check, not proof.

Similarly, don't lean on Section 9 melting point data to make a shelf-life claim. That needs actual stability testing on your finished formula, not an assumption drawn from a raw ingredient's spec sheet.

Keeping it organized

A simple habit: when you build a formula, pull the Section 9 data for every raw material into one reference sheet alongside the INCI names and percentages. It takes a few extra minutes per formula and saves real time later when someone asks "why does this claim say what it says" or "why did this batch look different from last time."
