Superfatting is one of those soap-making decisions that feels purely like a recipe choice until you sit down to file a notification and realize it changes what's actually on your ingredient list. A 5 percent superfat isn't just "extra moisturizing," it's a specific quantity of unreacted oil sitting in the finished bar, and that oil needs to be accounted for honestly.
What superfat actually is, chemically
When you saponify oils with lye, the reaction converts fatty acids into soap. Superfatting means you deliberately use less lye than the oils would fully consume, or add extra oil after the cook, so a calculated percentage of the original oils never reacts. That leftover fraction stays in the bar as free fatty acids and unreacted triglycerides, and it's what gives superfatted soap its softer, more conditioning feel compared to a zero-superfat bar.
The important part for labeling purposes: that leftover oil is still there in the finished product. It didn't become soap. It's a distinct component of your finished formula, chemically different from the saponified portion, even though it started as the same bottle of olive oil or shea butter.
Why this matters for an ingredient list
A cosmetic ingredient list, whether it's going on a label or into a notification, is supposed to reflect what is actually present in the finished product, not just what went into the pot. For a superfatted soap that makes a cosmetic claim (moisturizing, gentle, nourishing, anything beyond pure cleansing), that generally means representing both:
- The saponified soap itself, typically declared using the INCI names that correspond to the specific fats used, such as Sodium Olivate for saponified olive oil or Sodium Cocoate for saponified coconut oil
- The unreacted superfat oil, declared separately by its own INCI name, such as Olive Oil (INCI: Olea Europaea Fruit Oil) if that's what was used to superfat
Lumping everything under one generic soap term, or leaving the superfat oil off the list entirely because "it's the same oil as the soap," undersells what's actually in the bar and can misrepresent the concentration of that ingredient to a regulator or an allergic customer.
Working out the concentration range
This is where the math gets a little fiddly, but it's not complicated once you set it up:
- Start with your total oil weight in the recipe and your superfat percentage (say, 5 percent superfat on a batch using 500 grams of olive oil as part of the total oil blend).
- Calculate roughly how much of that specific oil remains unreacted based on the superfat percentage applied across the batch.
- Express that unreacted amount as a percentage of the total finished bar weight (including water, lye already reacted into soap, and any other additives), not just as a percentage of the original oil.
- Declare that resulting percentage, or a concentration range if your recipe varies batch to batch, against the specific oil's INCI name.
Because small-batch soap makers often adjust recipes slightly between batches, a concentration range (rather than one precise fixed number) is usually the more honest and more practical way to declare it, as long as the range genuinely reflects your normal batch-to-batch variation rather than papering over inconsistent recipes.
Where "true soap" fits into this
It's worth remembering that plain "true soap," meaning alkali salts of fatty acids sold only with a cleansing claim and nothing more, can be treated differently from a cosmetic in some markets. The moment you make a cosmetic-style claim on that bar, moisturizing, anti-acne, softening skin, softening or conditioning language tied to the superfat itself, it's generally treated as a cosmetic and needs the full ingredient declaration and, in Canada, a Cosmetic Notification Form filing with INCI names and concentrations.
