Where the CAS Number Actually Lives on an SDS
Section 3 of the SDS holds your CAS numbers, but matching each one to the right ingredient row takes more care than it looks.
Open any safety data sheet and you'll notice it's sixteen sections long, mostly written for handling and disposal, not ingredient declarations. If you're hunting for a CAS number to put on a cosmetic notification, you don't need to read all sixteen. You need section 3.
Section 3 is the composition section
Every properly formatted SDS follows the same sixteen-section structure, and section 3, labeled something like "Composition / Information on Ingredients," is where the substance identity data lives. This is where you'll find a table, or sometimes just a short list, showing each hazardous or notable component along with its CAS number and its concentration or concentration range.
If your supplier's SDS doesn't have a section 3 that looks like this, or jumps straight from section 2 to section 4, that's a sign the document is incomplete or was assembled carelessly. It's worth going back to the supplier and asking for a proper one before you rely on it for a filing.
Why the table format still causes mistakes
Section 3 tables usually list:
- The component name (sometimes trade name, sometimes chemical name, not always INCI)
- CAS number
- EC number, if applicable, especially on European-format SDSs
- Concentration or a concentration range (often expressed as a percentage band like "10-30%" rather than an exact figure)
The mistakes creep in around matching. A blend product's SDS might list four or five components in section 3, each with its own CAS number, but the blend itself is what appears on your supplier's spec sheet under a single trade name. If you copy the trade name's CAS number (assuming there even is one, since many blends don't have a single CAS number at all) instead of expanding out the individual components, your filing ends up misrepresenting what's actually in the product.
A practical way to work through it
- Confirm you have the right document version. SDSs get revised. Check the revision date and make sure you're not working from an outdated copy that predates a reformulation.
- Read section 1 first, briefly. It identifies the product name and confirms you're looking at the SDS for the exact product you're using, not a similarly named variant.
- Go to section 3 and list every row. Write down each component name, its CAS number, and its stated concentration range exactly as shown.
- Match each component to an INCI name. The name in section 3 is not guaranteed to be the INCI name. Cross-reference it, using the CAS number as your anchor since names can vary but the CAS number shouldn't.
- Carry the math through if it's a blend. If this SDS covers a blend you're using at, say, 2% of your total formula, and one listed component makes up 15-20% of the blend, that component's real concentration in your finished product is roughly 0.3-0.4% of the total, not 15-20%. Multiply the component percentage by your use level of the blend.
