From Lye Calculator to a Compliant Soap Label

How the oils and lye a calculator spits out actually turn into the INCI ingredient list and declarations your soap label needs.

You run your oils through a lye calculator, get your numbers, make the batch, cure it for weeks, and then you're staring at a blank label template wondering how "24 oz olive oil, 8 oz coconut oil, 4 oz castor oil, lye, water" turns into something that actually belongs on a package. That gap between recipe and label trips up a lot of soapmakers who are otherwise excellent at the craft side.

What the calculator gives you versus what the label needs

A lye calculator outputs recipe-stage information: oil weights, lye amount, water amount, superfat percentage, and estimated qualities like hardness or cleansing. That's exactly what you need to make the batch. It is not, on its own, an ingredient declaration. The label needs INCI names, and more specifically, it needs them reflecting what the oils actually become after saponification, not just what went into the pot.

The saponification naming shift

This is the part that catches new soapmakers. Once oils react with lye, they're no longer "olive oil" or "coconut oil" from a labeling standpoint. They become the corresponding sodium salt (or potassium salt, for liquid soap), and the convention is to name them "Sodium [Oil name]ate." Olive oil becomes Sodium Olivate. Coconut oil becomes Sodium Cocoate. Castor oil becomes Sodium Ricinoleate.

Common oil-to-saponified-name conversions:

If your soap is superfatted, meaning you deliberately used less lye than a full saponification would require so some oil remains unreacted, that leftover oil keeps its original, non-saponified INCI name on the label. So a superfatted bar might list both Sodium Olivate (the saponified portion) and Olive Oil (the small amount of unreacted excess), depending on how the formula is structured and how precisely you're accounting for it.

Glycerin and lye itself

Saponification produces glycerin as a natural byproduct, and in cold process soap that glycerin typically stays in the bar, so it's often listed as an ingredient in its own right, Glycerin, even though you never added it directly. Sodium Hydroxide (the lye) reacts fully in a properly made bar and technically isn't present in the finished product, but many labeling conventions still list it, since regulators and label reviewers want to see that lye was accounted for in the process even though none remains unreacted.

Where "true soap" status matters

Here's a genuinely important distinction. A true soap, meaning an alkali salt of a fatty acid sold with only a cleansing claim, can be treated differently from a cosmetic in some jurisdictions. The moment you add a cosmetic claim, something like "moisturizing," "softens skin," or "reduces acne," your bar stops being treated as a plain soap and becomes a cosmetic, subject to the same notification and ingredient disclosure obligations as any other cosmetic product. This is one of the most common compliance gaps in the handmade soap world: makers add gentle, well-meaning claims to their packaging without realizing that language reclassifies the product entirely.

Building the actual label

Once you know your saponified names, the workflow looks like this:

  1. List every oil by its saponified INCI name, in descending order of concentration, the same way you would with any cosmetic ingredient list.
  2. Include Glycerin if it's retained in the bar.
  3. List any additives, fragrance oils, essential oils, colorants, and exfoliants, by their INCI names, not trade names.
  4. Decide whether your claims keep you in true-soap territory or push you into cosmetic territory, and adjust your notification obligations accordingly.
  5. If you're in Canada, remember your label needs to be bilingual, English and French, regardless of whether the product ends up classified as a soap or a cosmetic.
