Where It Sits Alongside Other Humectants
Sodium PCA is often used in combination with other humectants rather than alone. A moisturizer might carry glycerin as the workhorse humectant at a higher percentage, with sodium PCA layered in at a lower percentage specifically for its NMF-mimicking marketing story and its slightly different skin feel. Neither replaces the other; they're doing complementary jobs.
Safety and Regulatory Notes
Sodium PCA doesn't carry special restrictions on Health Canada's Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist and is broadly considered a well-tolerated, common cosmetic ingredient, but "not currently restricted" isn't the same as "never check."
