Stability Testing Explained for Cosmetic Makers
What stability testing actually proves, roughly how long it takes, and how the results back up a shelf-life claim you can defend.
Someone asked us recently whether they could just pick "24 months" for their shelf-life claim because that's what a similar product on the shelf next to theirs said. You can't, not defensibly anyway, and this is where stability testing comes in. It's the thing standing between a shelf-life number you made up and one you can actually back up if a retailer or regulator asks.
What stability testing is actually checking for
Stability testing puts your product under conditions designed to accelerate whatever degradation would eventually happen on a bathroom shelf or in a warehouse. You're watching for several kinds of failure at once:
- Physical changes: separation, discoloration, texture change, crystallization
- Chemical changes: pH drift, a preservative breaking down, an active ingredient losing potency
- Microbial growth: whether your preservative system actually holds up over time, not just on day one
- Packaging interaction: whether the formula reacts with its container, degrades a pump mechanism, or causes a bottle to swell
A product can look perfectly fine and still be failing one of these in a way you can't see without testing.
The two common approaches
Real-time stability testing stores samples at normal room conditions and checks them at intervals, three months, six months, a year, and so on, for as long as you want to claim shelf life. This is the most accurate method because it reflects actual conditions, but it's slow. If you want to claim a two-year shelf life through real-time testing alone, you're waiting close to two years for full confirmation.
Accelerated stability testing stores samples at elevated temperatures (and sometimes humidity or light exposure) to speed up the same degradation processes. A few months at elevated temperature can approximate what a much longer period at room temperature would do. This is faster and it's why most small makers use it to get a working shelf-life estimate before launch, often combined with an ongoing real-time study that continues in parallel to confirm the accelerated results were right.
Freeze-thaw cycling is another common piece of this, repeatedly moving samples between cold and warm conditions to check whether the formula holds together through shipping and storage swings, particularly relevant if your product might sit in a hot delivery truck or a cold warehouse at different points in its life.
How long realistic testing takes
For a straightforward formula (a lotion or a liquid soap without unusual actives), an accelerated study typically runs a few months before you have a defensible estimate to work from, with real-time confirmation continuing in the background. More complex formulas, or ones with actives sensitive to oxidation or light, may need longer observation before you're comfortable with a number. There's no universal timeline that fits every product, so build testing time into your launch schedule rather than treating it as something to squeeze in at the last minute.
Turning results into a shelf-life claim you can defend
Once you have data, the shelf-life claim you put on packaging or communicate to a retailer should reflect what your testing actually showed, not the longest number that seemed plausible. If your accelerated testing suggests 18 months of stability and your real-time data at 12 months still looks solid, an 18-month claim is reasonable. Claiming 36 months on the strength of a 3-month accelerated study is not something you want to be asked to justify later.
Keep your test records. If a retailer's compliance team, an insurer, or a regulator ever asks how you arrived at a shelf-life figure, "we tested it" is a much stronger answer with actual data behind it than a claim based on what similar products do.
Where stability fits with your regulatory paperwork
Stability testing isn't the same thing as filing a notification, but it feeds directly into the safety story behind your product. In the EU, for instance, the Cosmetic Product Safety Report a safety assessor signs off on will typically want to see stability data supporting the product's intended shelf life and use conditions. Even in markets like Canada, where the Cosmetic Notification Form is a notification rather than a pre-market approval, having real stability data behind your product protects you if questions ever come up later.
A practical starting point
If you're a small maker without an in-house lab, third-party stability testing labs exist specifically to run these studies for indie brands, and costs vary a lot depending on how many conditions and time points you want covered. Start with your riskiest product, the one with the most actives or the most delicate emulsion, rather than trying to test your whole line at once.
