Two Legal Ways to Write a Handmade Soap Ingredient List
Saponified oils or oils plus lye: both are accepted ways to list soap ingredients, and each fits a different labeling situation.
Ask five soap makers how to write an ingredient list and you'll get five slightly different answers, and confusingly, more than one of them can be correct. The reason is that cold process soap goes through a chemical reaction, the fats react with an alkali and turn into salts of fatty acids plus glycerin, and there are two accepted conventions for representing that on a label. Neither is "more legal" than the other. They're just describing the same chemistry from two different angles.
Method one: list the fats and the alkali as reacted
This convention lists your starting oils and butters, followed by the alkali, in descending order by weight as they went into the pot, before saponification:
- Olea Europaea (Olive) Oil
- Aqua
- Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil
- Sodium Hydroxide
- Elaeis Guineensis (Palm) Oil
- Parfum
This is the more common approach among small-batch soap makers, partly because it's simpler to generate directly from your recipe. You already know exactly how many grams of olive oil and coconut oil went into the batch, so the ordering is easy to calculate honestly.
Method two: name the saponified salts directly
The second convention names the actual chemical output of the reaction, the sodium salts of the fatty acids, since technically no free sodium hydroxide remains in a properly cured bar:
- Sodium Olivate
- Aqua
- Sodium Cocoate
- Sodium Palmate
- Parfum
Here "Sodium Olivate" means the sodium salt made from olive oil, and "Sodium Cocoate" is the salt from coconut oil. This method reflects the fact that if your soap is properly formulated and cured, there shouldn't be residual unreacted sodium hydroxide left in the finished bar, so naming "Sodium Hydroxide" as an ingredient can read as chemically inaccurate to some reviewers, even though it's still a widely accepted way of showing the recipe as formulated.
Why both exist and when to use each
Ingredient list conventions are ultimately about what the label needs to communicate and to whom. If your market's cosmetic ingredient list guidance leans on describing the product as manufactured, the fats-plus-alkali version can be a reasonable, honest description of the recipe as mixed. If it leans on describing the product as it exists in the final bar, the saponified salts version better reflects the finished chemistry.
A practical rule some makers follow: use whichever convention matches how you calculated your recipe, since that's the version you can most confidently verify is accurate. If you built your formula in a lye calculator that outputs grams of each oil and grams of sodium hydroxide, method one maps directly onto your actual process. If you're working from a formulation reference that already expresses things as sodium salts, method two may be more natural.
A word of caution on mixing the two
Where makers get into trouble is blending the two conventions inconsistently within one label, naming some fats as "Sodium X-ate" and leaving others as raw oils plus a separate "Sodium Hydroxide" line. Pick one convention and apply it consistently across the whole ingredient list. A reviewer or regulator reading a label wants to see one coherent logic, not a patchwork.
What doesn't change either way
Regardless of which naming convention you choose, a few things stay constant:

That last point matters more each year. If your soap contains essential oils or fragrance blends with allergens like linalool or limonene above the applicable rinse-off threshold, those need to be named individually on top of whichever base-oil convention you're using. The naming method for your soap base doesn't exempt you from allergen labeling rules.
