Lactic Acid: An AHA That Is Also a Humectant

Most alpha hydroxy acids get filed under one job description: exfoliant. Lactic acid never sits still that neatly. It exfoliates, sure, but it also behaves like a humectant, grabbing water and holding it against the skin the way glycerin does. That dual identity is exactly why it shows up in everything from resurfacing serums to plain moisturizers marketed as gentle.

What lactic acid actually does

At the molecular level, lactic acid is a small alpha hydroxy acid, meaning the acid group sits next to a carbon with a hydroxyl attached. That structure is what lets AHAs loosen the bonds between dead skin cells on the surface, encouraging them to shed. Glycolic acid does the same thing but with a smaller molecule, which is why it penetrates faster and can feel sharper on skin.

Lactic acid's slightly larger size slows its penetration down a notch, which is part of why formulators reach for it when they want exfoliation without as much sting. But the humectant behavior is a separate mechanism entirely. Lactic acid is hygroscopic. It draws atmospheric moisture and holds onto it, similar in principle to how sodium lactate (its salt form) is used purely as a humectant in some formulas with no exfoliating intent at all.

So you get two functions from one INCI entry: AHA exfoliant and humectant, both real, both dose-dependent, both worth knowing when you are deciding how a product should be described.

Lactic acid can come from bacterial fermentation of sugar, which is how a lot of "naturally derived" claims get made, or it can be produced synthetically. Both routes land on the same INCI name and the same CAS number. A regulator reading your filing does not see the word "fermented" anywhere. It sees Lactic Acid, full stop.

Where the concentration line matters

This is the part makers underestimate. Lactic acid, like other AHAs, has different regulatory treatment depending on where the concentration lands and what claim the product makes. A small amount used to nudge pH is a completely different regulatory story than a percentage high enough to actively resurface skin. Because the exact concentration thresholds and any labeling requirements tied to AHA content are market-specific and do get revisited, do not treat any number you saw in an old formulation guide as gospel. Check the current rule for the market you are selling into before you lock a percentage into a formula.

One frequent mixup: a supplier blend that lists "10% Lactic Acid solution" does not mean your finished product has 10% lactic acid in it. If you add that blend at 5% of your formula, the actual lactic acid concentration in the finished product is 0.5%. That math has to be carried through to whatever you file, not just noted in a lab notebook.

Why the dual function trips people up on labeling

Because lactic acid does two things, makers sometimes describe it inconsistently across a product line. One SKU calls it "moisturizing," another calls it "gentle exfoliant," and the ingredient list looks identical on both. That is not automatically a problem, but it does mean your safety substantiation and any claims support should match what the product is actually doing at the concentration you are using, not just what the ingredient is capable of doing in isolation at a much higher dose.

If you are building a resurfacing line and a soothing line off the same lactic acid stock, keep a clear internal note on what level triggers which claim. It saves a lot of confusion later when someone asks why two products with the same acid are marketed so differently.

A practical checklist before you file

  • Confirm whether your lactic acid is a straight material or arriving pre-diluted in a supplier blend, and do the math on real concentration.
  • Decide which function you are leaning on for marketing claims, exfoliant or humectant, and make sure your safety file supports that use.
  • Check whether your target market has a specific concentration threshold or labeling note tied to AHA content before you finalize the percentage.
  • Keep the CAS number 50-21-5 attached to your ingredient record so there is no ambiguity between lactic acid and its salt, sodium lactate.
