Reading the Latin Binomial Inside a Botanical INCI Name
Botanical INCI names look intimidating because they encode genus, species, and plant part in one string. Here is how to read them.
"Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil" is not a mysterious code. It is sunflower oil, and once you know how to read a botanical INCI name, every other plant ingredient on a label stops looking like Latin homework and starts looking like a small, consistent puzzle with the same three pieces every time.
The three parts, in order
A botanical INCI name is built from a formula, not a random string:
- Genus, capitalized, the broader biological grouping the plant belongs to.
- Species, lowercase, the specific plant within that genus.
- Plant part and preparation, plain English, telling you what was taken from the plant and how.
Take "Lavandula Angustifolia Oil." Lavandula is the genus, angustifolia is the species (true lavender, as opposed to a different lavender species), and Oil tells you it is the essential oil, not a water extract or a wax. Change any one piece and you have a different ingredient entirely. Lavandula angustifolia and Lavandula latifolia are related plants with meaningfully different chemistry, and a filing that confuses one for the other is not a rounding error, it is the wrong ingredient.
Why the plant part matters as much as the species
The genus and species tell you what plant you are dealing with. The last part of the name tells you what actually ended up in your bottle, and that can vary enormously from the same plant.

Notice that "Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice" and a hypothetical "Aloe Barbadensis Flower Extract" would come from the same species but are functionally unrelated materials, made from different plant parts using different processes. If your supplier documentation just says "aloe" without the full name, you genuinely do not know which of several very different ingredients you are holding.
Where this gets genuinely tricky
Some botanical materials show up under names that look similar but are not interchangeable, and the difference is easy to miss if you are skimming. Two species in the same genus can have different allergen profiles, different typical use levels, and different restriction status depending on the market. This is one reason plain "essential oil" claims on a label are not enough from a compliance standpoint. The INCI name is doing real identification work, and shortening it or guessing at the species defeats the purpose.
It is also worth knowing that CAS numbers do not map cleanly onto botanicals the way they do onto single defined chemicals. A botanical extract is a complex, variable mixture, and some botanical INCI entries simply have no CAS number attached at all, because there is no single molecule to register. That is normal. Do not go looking for a CAS number that does not exist, and do not let a missing CAS number make you think the ingredient wasn't properly identified. The Latin binomial and plant part are the identification for botanicals.
Practical reading tips
- If a name ends in "Oil," it usually came from pressing or extracting a fatty part of the plant, most often seeds or nuts.
- If it ends in "Water," it is typically a hydrosol, the aqueous byproduct of steam distillation, and is mostly water with trace aromatic compounds, not a concentrated actives carrier.
- If it ends in "Extract," check the supplier documentation for the solvent used to make the extract, because the same plant part extracted in water versus glycerin versus alcohol produces different materials with the same base INCI wording.
- Never abbreviate or guess at the species portion when transcribing a formula. A typo here is not cosmetic, it identifies a different plant.
Getting it right on paper
When you are building an ingredient list for a filing, resist the temptation to shorten botanical names to whatever the marketing copy calls them, "rose water" or "green tea extract." Those consumer-friendly phrases are fine for a product description, but the ingredient declaration needs the full Latin binomial with plant part, spelled exactly as the supplier's documentation states it, because that is what ties your formula back to a specific, identifiable material.
