Cetearyl Alcohol: The Fatty Alcohol That Is Not Drying

Why cetearyl alcohol thickens and stabilizes emulsions instead of drying skin, plus how to list its CAS blend correctly on a filing.

A customer once emailed a soap maker asking why her "moisturizing" lotion contained alcohol, since alcohol dries skin. She had to explain that cetearyl alcohol is nothing like the isopropyl alcohol in hand sanitizer, and the confusion is common enough that it is worth unpacking properly.

Two very different families sharing one word

The word "alcohol" in chemistry just means a carbon chain with an OH group attached. That covers everything from the small, volatile, genuinely drying ethanol and isopropyl alcohol up to large, waxy, solid fatty alcohols like cetearyl alcohol. The small ones evaporate fast and strip lipids from skin. The fatty ones are solid at room temperature, melt around body-adjacent temperatures, and behave more like a soft wax than a solvent.

Cetearyl alcohol is actually a blend of two fatty alcohols:

  • Cetyl alcohol (16-carbon chain)
  • Stearyl alcohol (18-carbon chain)

The ratio varies by supplier, which matters when you are mapping percentages for a filing, since the blend as a whole gets one INCI listing even though it is technically two components.

What it actually does in a formula

Cetearyl alcohol is a fatty alcohol emulsifier and thickener. It helps oil and water phases stay combined, gives lotions and creams body, and contributes to that dense, cushiony texture people associate with a rich cream. It also has mild emollient properties on its own, sitting on the skin surface and reducing moisture loss, which is the opposite of a drying effect.

Typical roles you will see on an ingredient list:

INCI and CAS basics for your filing

On an ingredient declaration, you will see it written as Cetearyl Alcohol. Because it is a blend, you may see different CAS numbers depending on the supplier's documentation, sometimes a combined CAS for the blend and sometimes separate CAS numbers for cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol individually. This is one of those cases the general rule about mapping trade names to INCI applies directly: whatever your supplier calls their branded blend, cetearyl alcohol is the INCI name that goes on your Cosmetic Notification Form and your label, not the trade name.

If your supplier's spec sheet lists it as part of a larger emulsifying wax blend, remember to expand that blend into its actual components and multiply each component's percentage by the blend's use level in your formula. An emulsifying wax at 5 percent of your formula that is 80 percent cetearyl alcohol contributes 4 percent cetearyl alcohol to your finished product, not 5 percent.

Where the "drying" myth comes from

Part of the confusion is genuine: some fatty alcohols in very specific chemistry, like straight cetyl alcohol used at high concentration in certain hair products, can build up and feel heavy or occasionally irritate sensitive scalps if overused. That is a texture and buildup issue, not a moisture-stripping issue, and it is a completely different mechanism from what happens with solvent alcohols. Cetearyl alcohol at typical formulation percentages in lotions and creams (commonly in the low single digits) is not associated with the drying effect people worry about.

A quick label-reading habit worth building

When you are checking a finished product's label against what you expect, glance for these patterns:

  • "Alcohol Denat." or "Denatured Alcohol" near the top of the list, high concentration, likely drying, often in toners or setting sprays
  • "Cetearyl Alcohol," "Cetyl Alcohol," or "Stearyl Alcohol" lower down the list, texture and stability function, not drying
  • "Isopropyl Alcohol" for cleaning or sanitizing products specifically

That distinction alone answers most customer questions about why their rich cream contains something called alcohol.

Getting the concentration right on a notification

Because cetearyl alcohol is common in emulsified products and often supplied as part of a blend, it is one of the ingredients most likely to get mis-declared on a CNF simply from arithmetic slip-ups when expanding supplier blends.
