Proprietary Actives With Trademarked Names and Real INCI

Ingredient suppliers love a good trademark. "Matrixyl," "Argireline," "Snap-8," these names sound impressive on a marketing page, and that's exactly the point, they're built for marketing, not for filing. Every one of them resolves to a real INCI name underneath, and that's what actually goes on your notification.
Why trademarked names exist at all
A supplier develops a specific peptide, extract complex, or active ingredient system, gives it a memorable trademarked name, and sells it as a differentiated product even though the underlying chemistry has a standard INCI designation that any formulator or regulator can look up. The trademark protects the supplier's brand and marketing position. It has no regulatory standing on its own. A trade name never appears on a cosmetic filing, full stop, you always map it to the actual INCI.
Working through a real example
Take a well-known trademarked peptide often sold as a wrinkle-reduction active. Its marketing name suggests something proprietary and unique, but its actual composition, once you check the supplier's technical data sheet or safety data sheet, resolves to a specific peptide sequence with its own established INCI name, something like "Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4," plus whatever carrier or solvent system the supplier uses to deliver it, commonly a mix like water, glycerin, and a preservative system. All of those carrier components need their own INCI declarations too, at their actual concentration within the blend.
This is the same underlying pattern across the entire proprietary-active category:

Where to actually find the real INCI
The supplier's technical data sheet is usually the fastest source, and reputable suppliers include an INCI declaration on it even while marketing the trademarked name prominently elsewhere on the same document. If the technical data sheet doesn't have it, the safety data sheet will, specifically section 3, which covers composition, since SDS documents follow a standard 16-section format and section 3 exists precisely for this purpose.
If neither document gives you a clear INCI breakdown, that's a sign to go back to the supplier directly and ask, the same way you'd escalate a missing allergen breakdown: request the INCI declaration by name, and if the general sales channel can't produce it, ask for their technical or regulatory contact.
Concentration math still applies
Once you have the real INCI names, you're not done. A trademarked active is almost always sold as a diluted blend, not the pure active ingredient, precisely because pure peptides and many actives aren't stable or usable at 100% concentration. If your peptide complex is, say, 2% active peptide diluted in a carrier system, and you're using that complex at 3% in your finished formula, the peptide's real concentration in your product is a small fraction of a percent, not 3%. Every component in the blend needs this same multiplication: component percentage within the blend, times the blend's use level in your formula.
Why this matters beyond just filing correctly
Skipping this step doesn't just risk an incomplete filing. It can also mean missing a Hotlist restriction that applies to a specific active buried inside a trademarked blend, or missing a fragrance allergen that's part of a "proprietary botanical complex" marketed for its scent as much as its function. The trademark can genuinely obscure a regulatory issue you'd have caught immediately if the ingredient had been declared plainly by its INCI name from the start.
