How to List Saponified Oils on a Soap Ingredient Panel
Sodium olivate or Olive oil and lye? A clear rule for listing saponified oils correctly on a soap label or filing.
Every soap maker hits this question eventually. You made a batch with olive oil, coconut oil, and lye, and now you need to write an ingredient list. Do you write "Sodium Olivate" or "Olea Europaea (Olive) Oil, Sodium Hydroxide"? Both show up on real soap labels, and the confusion is understandable because the answer depends on which convention you're following and, honestly, on habit as much as rule.
Here's the logic behind each approach.
The saponified-name convention
When an oil reacts completely with lye, it stops being that oil. Chemically, the triglyceride has been split into glycerin and a fatty acid salt. Olive oil plus sodium hydroxide becomes glycerin plus sodium olivate. So one school of labeling says: name the product of the reaction, not the ingredients you poured into the pot. Under this convention:
- Olive oil + sodium hydroxide becomes Sodium Olivate
- Coconut oil + sodium hydroxide becomes Sodium Cocoate
- Palm oil + sodium hydroxide becomes Sodium Palmate
- Castor oil + sodium hydroxide becomes Sodium Ricinoleate
This is the more technically precise approach because it reflects the actual finished chemistry, and it's the pattern you'll see on most commercial bar soap wrappers.
The oils-plus-lye convention
The other common approach lists the raw materials you started with, followed by sodium hydroxide as a separate ingredient, on the theory that a well-made bar of soap contains little to no unreacted lye anyway (a well-superfatted recipe leaves excess oil, not excess alkali), and listing the starting materials is more transparent to a customer who recognizes "olive oil" but has never heard of "sodium olivate." Under this convention you'd write:
Olea Europaea (Olive) Oil, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Sodium Hydroxide, Aqua
Both conventions are used in the market and both are defensible. What actually causes problems is mixing them inconsistently within the same list, or worse, listing sodium hydroxide as an ingredient while also using the saponified name, which implies free lye is present in a finished bar when it almost certainly isn't.

Note that potassium is used instead of sodium for liquid soap: potassium hydroxide plus olive oil gives you Potassium Olivate, for example. If your recipe mixes sodium and potassium hydroxide, as some cream soap recipes do, you may end up with both types of salt in the finished bar, and both should appear.
Superfat and unreacted oil
If you superfat your recipe, meaning you deliberately use more oil than the lye can fully saponify, that leftover oil is genuinely unreacted and should be listed separately by its raw INCI name in addition to the saponified names for the reacted portion. A 5 percent superfat recipe built mostly from olive oil might reasonably list both "Sodium Olivate" and "Olea Europaea (Olive) Oil" if you're tracking that split precisely, though many small makers simplify by listing the full oil under its saponified name and treating any superfat as a rounding matter rather than a separate line item.
Where this gets checked
If you're filing a Cosmetic Notification Form in Canada, ingredients are listed by INCI name with a concentration or range, and reviewers expect the saponified names for true soap chemistry rather than a list that implies free sodium hydroxide sitting in the bar. Get this wrong and it can read as either an inaccurate ingredient declaration or, in the worst case, as a product containing unreacted caustic, which is a very different safety picture.
One more wrinkle worth flagging: whether your bar is even treated as a cosmetic at all depends on your claims. A bar sold purely as "true soap" with a cleansing claim can sit outside cosmetic regulation in some markets, but the moment you claim it moisturizes, fights acne, or softens skin, it's a cosmetic and needs the same ingredient rigor as a lotion.
