Cocamidopropyl betaine almost never shows up at your door as a pure substance. It ships as a solution, usually somewhere around 30 percent active material in water, sometimes with a trace of sodium chloride left over from the manufacturing process. So when you sit down to build your ingredient list, you hit a question that trips up a lot of formulators: do you list the water that came in the drum, or just the betaine itself?
The short answer is that the water counts, but it usually gets absorbed into your total Aqua line rather than listed as a separate entry.
What's actually in the drum
A typical cocamidopropyl betaine supply drum breaks down roughly like this:

Those numbers vary by supplier and lot, so always pull the real figure from the certificate of analysis or the supplier's technical data sheet rather than assuming 30 percent flat.
Why this matters for your concentration math
Say your formula calls for 8% of the betaine solution as it comes from the drum. If that solution is 30% active, the true concentration of Cocamidopropyl Betaine in your finished product is 8% times 0.30, which comes out to 2.4%. That 2.4% is the number that belongs on your ingredient list and on any regulatory filing, not the 8% you weighed out on the scale.
This is the same logic that applies to any supplier blend: multiply the component percentage by the blend's use level in your formula. Skip that step and you'll either understate an active ingredient or, worse, misjudge where you sit relative to a concentration limit that matters for your market.
Where the water goes
Here's where people get stuck. Technically, the INCI name for water is Aqua, and the betaine solution is carrying real water into your batch. Do you add a second Aqua line just for that?
In practice, no. Water is water regardless of where it enters the formula. The convention is to add up all the water in your batch, whatever came in with your surfactant, your extract, your preservative blend, plus whatever you added directly, and report it as a single Aqua entry at the top of your ingredient list (since it's almost always the largest single component by weight). You don't need six separate Aqua lines tracing water back to each raw material.
Sodium Chloride is a bit different. If it's present at a level that's meaningful in your finished product, it should appear as its own line, listed by its own concentration, not folded into the betaine entry.
A worked example
Picture a shampoo bar wash base:
- Weigh in 8% cocamidopropyl betaine solution (30% active, ~68% water, ~2% NaCl per the supplier sheet).
- That gives you 2.4% Cocamidopropyl Betaine, roughly 5.44% water from this ingredient alone, and about 0.16% Sodium Chloride.
- Add those water and salt contributions to whatever comes from every other raw material in the batch, plus any water you added directly.
- Your final list shows Aqua as one combined figure, Cocamidopropyl Betaine at 2.4%, and Sodium Chloride at its true total if it clears the threshold your market cares about.
Getting the CAS number right
Cocamidopropyl betaine does have an assigned CAS number, but always confirm it against your specific supplier's documentation rather than copying one from memory or an old spec sheet. Betaine chemistry can vary slightly by manufacturing route, and some suppliers list more than one CAS reference depending on the fatty acid source (typically coconut-derived). When in doubt, the safety data sheet's Section 3, composition information, is the place to check, not the marketing literature.
