Saponification Basics Every Soap Labeler Should Know

The chemistry of saponification explained only as far as it changes what belongs on a compliant cold process soap ingredient list.

Half the confusion in soap labeling comes down to one chemistry fact people either never learned or forgot the moment it stopped being on a test: the oils and the lye you started with are not what's actually in the bar. Saponification changes them into something else, and your ingredient list needs to reflect the finished product, not your shopping list.

What actually happens in the pot

Saponification is the reaction between a fat or oil, technically a triglyceride, and an alkali, typically sodium hydroxide for bar soap or potassium hydroxide for liquid soap. That reaction produces soap, which is chemically a salt of a fatty acid, plus glycerin as a byproduct. Once the reaction completes, the sodium hydroxide is gone, consumed entirely in the process, assuming your recipe was properly balanced.

This is why "sodium hydroxide" shouldn't appear on a finished cold process soap's ingredient list if the soap has fully saponified and been properly cured. The lye reacted. It's not sitting in the bar as free lye, it's now part of the soap salts.

What actually goes on the label instead

Because the reaction transforms specific oils into specific soap salts, the INCI convention for cold process soap names the resulting saponified oil, not the raw ingredients you started with. A bar made primarily with olive oil and coconut oil, saponified with sodium hydroxide, typically lists as something like:

  • Sodium Olivate (or Sodium Olive Oil-ate depending on convention, saponified olive oil)
  • Sodium Cocoate (saponified coconut oil)
  • Aqua (water)
  • Glycerin (the natural byproduct of the reaction)

Notice sodium hydroxide isn't on that list at all in a properly cured bar. That surprises a lot of new soap makers who assume every raw ingredient in their recipe has to show up somewhere on the final label.

Why superfat oils are the exception

Most cold process recipes are formulated with a superfat, meaning a percentage of the oils is intentionally left unreacted to keep the finished bar moisturizing rather than harsh. That leftover oil didn't saponify, so it stays in its original form and gets listed by its own INCI name, separate from the saponified soap salts.

So a 5% superfatted bar with olive oil as the superfat oil would list both Sodium Olivate (the saponified portion) and Olea Europaea (Olive) Oil (the unreacted superfat portion) as distinct ingredients, because chemically they are distinct at that point, even though they both started as the same bottle of olive oil.

Where makers get this wrong

The two most common mistakes:

  1. Listing sodium hydroxide on a fully cured, properly balanced bar. If your lye calculator was used correctly and the soap has cured, there shouldn't be free lye left. Listing it anyway is technically inaccurate, though some makers do it out of caution. Get comfortable with your lye calculator's math instead of hedging with an inaccurate label.
  2. Listing raw oils instead of their saponified names for the reacted portion. This one goes the other direction, understating that a transformation happened at all, which misrepresents what's actually in the bar.

Ordering these on the list

Since ingredient lists are ordered by concentration, and saponified oils in cold process soap typically make up the bulk of the formula by a wide margin, your Sodium Cocoate or Sodium Olivate entries usually sit near the top, with superfat oils, fragrance, and colorants further down depending on their actual percentages.

Getting this translation right, from recipe oils to their correct saponified INCI names, is one of the more error-prone steps in a soap maker's first filing.
