Glycerite Extracts: Listing the Extract and the Glycerin

Why a glycerin-based botanical extract needs two separate INCI lines and how to carry the concentration math through correctly.

A jar of calendula glycerite looks like one ingredient. It's actually at least two, and sometimes three, once you break it down for a filing. This trips up makers constantly, especially anyone who moved from candles or general craft supply into cosmetics and picked up the habit of listing a supplier's product name as if it were a single INCI entity.

What a glycerite actually is

A glycerite is a botanical extract made by macerating plant material in glycerin instead of water, alcohol, or oil. Glycerin is a good solvent for a lot of water-soluble plant compounds, and it's shelf-stable and skin-friendly, which is why it's popular in natural and clean-label formulations. But from the regulator's point of view, "calendula glycerite" isn't an ingredient name, it's a description of a process. The filing needs the actual components.

Splitting the label: two lines, sometimes three

When your supplier extracts calendula in glycerin, the finished glycerite typically breaks into:

  • Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract (the botanical extract itself)
  • Glycerin (the solvent, INCI name Glycerin, CAS 56-81-5)
  • Aqua/Water, if the glycerite is a glycerin-water blend rather than pure glycerin, which is common

Your supplier's certificate of analysis or ingredient statement should tell you the actual ratio. A glycerite is rarely 100% glycerin with dissolved plant compounds; it's often a defined percentage of glycerin, a percentage of water, and the extracted plant material making up the rest by weight. If your supplier documentation just says "calendula glycerite, 100%" with no breakdown, that's a documentation gap to push back on before you file, because the notification needs the individual INCI components, not the trade description.

Doing the concentration math correctly

This is where the blend-expansion logic that applies to all supplier blends applies here too. Say your formula calls for 2% calendula glycerite, and your supplier states the glycerite is 60% glycerin, 35% water, and 5% calendula extract by weight. In the finished product, that 2% glycerite becomes:

You multiply the blend's use level in your formula by each component's share of the blend. Skip this step and your filing understates how much glycerin and water are actually in the product, which usually isn't a safety problem on its own since both are common, low-concern ingredients, but it does matter for accuracy of the ingredient declaration and for correctly totaling any other glycerin or water already in your base formula from other sources.

Why the extract line matters more than the solvent lines

Glycerin and water rarely carry restrictions in the concentration ranges typical glycerites contribute. The botanical extract is where you want to actually pay attention, because plant extracts can carry their own considerations depending on the specific plant and market. Some extracts show up on ingredient hotlists or restricted lists depending on which compounds they carry at meaningful concentration, and fragrance-relevant botanicals in particular can trigger allergen disclosure rules if they carry allergens like linalool or limonene naturally.

If your glycerite is made from a botanical known for essential-oil-type constituents (chamomile, lavender, and similar aromatic plants used as glycerites rather than distilled oils), check whether the extract itself carries enough of an allergenic constituent to matter for label disclosure, separate from any actual essential oil elsewhere in your formula.

CAS numbers on the extract line

Glycerin has a clean, single, universally recognized CAS number: 56-81-5. Botanical extracts are messier. Many, including common flower and herb extracts, don't have a single CAS number at all, since an "extract" is a mixture of naturally variable composition rather than a single defined chemical substance. Don't be surprised if your calendula extract line has no CAS number while your glycerin line has one; that's expected, not an error, and a notification system should accommodate ingredients without a CAS number rather than treat the absence as incomplete data.

A quick checklist for glycerite ingredients

  1. Get the actual glycerin-to-water-to-extract ratio from your supplier, not just the trade name
  2. List each component separately by INCI name
  3. Multiply each component's ratio by your formula's use level of the glycerite to get true finished-product percentages
  4. Check the extract component against your target market's ingredient hotlist or restricted list
  5. Confirm whether the extract carries natural allergen constituents relevant to your market's disclosure rules
