Sodium Tallowate or Sodium Palmate on Your Soap Panel
A breakdown of which saponified-oil INCI name goes on your soap label depending on the fat you actually used, tallow, palm, or coconut.
You mixed up a batch with beef tallow and coconut oil, cured it for four weeks, and now you're staring at the label template wondering what to actually write. "Soap" isn't an ingredient name. Neither is "tallow" by itself once it's been through the lye. The INCI system has a specific naming convention for saponified fats, and getting it wrong is one of the most common labeling mistakes new soap makers make.
The rule: name the fat, then saponify it
INCI names for soap follow a pattern: the fat's name plus the salt it becomes after saponification. Sodium hydroxide turns fatty acids into sodium salts, so the naming convention is "Sodium [Fat]ate."
- Tallow (beef or mutton fat) becomes Sodium Tallowate
- Palm oil becomes Sodium Palmate
- Coconut oil becomes Sodium Cocoate
- Olive oil becomes Sodium Olivate
- Castor oil becomes Sodium Castorate
- Shea butter becomes Sodium Shea Butterate
If you used potassium hydroxide instead (common for liquid soap), the same fats become Potassium Tallowate, Potassium Cocoate, and so on. The salt matters. Swapping "sodium" for "potassium" on the label when you actually used the other one is a real error, not just a technicality, because it misrepresents the actual finished ingredient.
Why this trips people up
Most small-batch soap makers buy their oils by their everyday names. Nobody orders "tallow" and thinks about what INCI name will eventually go on the wrapper. The disconnect happens at the recipe-to-label step, and it's made worse by three things:
- Blended fats. A lot of "tallow" sold to soapers is actually a blend, or the soap recipe mixes tallow with lard, palm, and coconut in the same pot. Each fat that goes into the pot needs its own saponified name on the label, in descending order by weight in the finished bar.
- Palm confusion. Palm oil becomes Sodium Palmate. Palm kernel oil is a different fraction of the same fruit and becomes Sodium Palm Kernelate, which behaves more like coconut oil in a recipe. They are not interchangeable on paper even though the plant of origin is the same.
- Superfat and unreacted oil. If you superfat your recipe (leave excess unreacted fat in the bar for conditioning), that leftover oil is listed separately by its ordinary INCI name, not the saponified form, because it never reacted with the lye. A 5% superfatted olive oil bar would show both Sodium Olivate (the saponified portion) and Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil (the free oil) as separate line items.

Lard is the one genuine gray area. You'll see both conventions used in practice, and it's worth checking current guidance if you're unsure which is expected in your market, since naming conventions for less common fats can shift.
Where this fits into the bigger compliance picture
If your soap only makes a cleansing claim, in a lot of markets it can be treated as "true soap" rather than a cosmetic, which changes what paperwork applies. The moment you add a claim like "moisturizing," "gentle on eczema-prone skin," or "softens rough patches," you've made a cosmetic claim, and the product needs to be treated as a cosmetic under that market's rules, ingredient list included.
That distinction matters for labeling too. A true soap bar in some markets can get away with simpler labeling, while a cosmetic-claim soap needs the full INCI ingredient declaration, in the right order, with the right saponified names. So before you finalize your label, decide honestly which category your bar falls into based on what the packaging actually says it does.
Getting the order right
INCI lists go by descending weight at the time of formulation, not after saponification changes the fat's mass slightly. If your recipe is 40% olive oil, 30% coconut oil, 20% palm oil, and 10% castor oil, your label order should generally follow that same descending sequence: Sodium Olivate, Sodium Cocoate, Sodium Palmate, Sodium Castorate, plus water (listed as Aqua) and any superfat oils or additives after.
